We are passionate about our time in the Rocky Mountains because it is difficult to spend quality family time during our busy work week. Estes Park is the perfect place to cut back on our screen time and really enjoy the outdoors as a family. From hiking to boating there is so much to do, here are some of our favorite outdoor adventures:
Lake Estes
A great walking trail goes around Lake Estes and leads to downtown Estes Park. The marina offers boat rental during the summer.

Estes Park Aerial Tramway
Iconic red trams go up and down Prospect Mountain in Estes Park, Colorado. At the top you can enjoy sweeping views from the platform and a small souvenir and coffee shop.

Hiking
Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding area offer limitless hiking opportunities. We’ve organized our favorite hikes by distance with three categories; under 2 miles, 2-4 miles and beyond 4 miles.

Scenic Drives
Trail Ridge Road is a scenic high elevation highway that connects the East side of Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado to the West side of the park leading into Grand Lake, CO. You will see panoramic views of the alpine tundra and are likely to spot wildlife such as herds of elk. There are several overlooks including the Alpine Visitors Center. Due to weather conditions, the road is typically open late May to mid-October.

Old Fall River Road is a one-way gravel road up that winds up to the Alpine Visitors Center. You can connect to Trail Ridge Road to go back down toward the East side of RMNP and Estes Park or go on to the West side and Grand Lake, CO.

Grand Lake
Grand Lake is the largest natural lake in Colorado. Water recreation activities include boating, swimming and paddle boarding.

Horseback Riding
You can get a new perspective of the park by riding the trails on horseback with one of the local touring companies.

Picnics
One of the most relaxing ways to spend an afternoon in the park is packing a picnic and finding an open picnic table with outstanding views.

Playgrounds
The town of Estes Park and Grand Lake, Colorado have great playgrounds for children to enjoy.

Estes Park Riverwalk
You can walk along the Big Thompson River and enjoy the beauty and excitement of downtown Estes Park. Stop in one of the many shops and restaurants to explore or play with the outdoor musical instruments.

Wildlife Spotting
Take a drive or hike around Rocky Mountain National Park and you are sure to spot wildlife. We’ve seen moose, elk, deer, coyote, eagles, fox and more!

The beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park inspires outdoor adventures. We are lucky to spend time in nature to learn and grow as a family.
